Profile

Description

Château La Rode is located near Saint-Emilion, in Saint-Aiguilhe on the slopes of Castillon la Bataille. The estate is owned and operated by the same family since 1963 and is managed by Christine Faux. The estate has been certified organic since 2012 and there are 20.7 hectares of vines in total, but the majority of the land is planted to Merlot, which takes centre stage in their Bordeaux blend. The average age of the vines is 30 years in age. Côtes-de-Castillon takes its name from the famous battle of Castillon, which was fought in 1453. The best terroir can be found on the plateau with large deposits of limestone and clay in the soils, which are similar to some of the terroirs you would find in Saint-Emilion. Production is limited to red wine and there are close to 350 grape growers, 100 of them work exclusively with the local cooperatives. The dominant grape varieties are Merlot and Cabernet Franc. This vintage is drinking just perfectly right now. The tannins are well-integrated and have softened over the years. Supported by generous black fruit flavours and well-defined acidity, the palate is supported by black plum, leather, tinned black olives, and dried bay leaf. The finish lingers.

Pairing

Braised beef cheeks, roasted duck with red wine demi, grilled vegetables.

Aromas and Flavours

Plum

Sweet, fruity and sensual, similar stone fruit aromas to a peach, but without the 'fuzziness'.

Black currant

Sometimes also referred to as 'cassis', this black fruit tasting note is common in red wines.

Chocolate

From milk to dark chocolate, this aroma is irresistible, just like that bar hidden in your drawer.

Spice

Warm, sensuous, exotic, fragrant, aromatic-like the first whiff of clove.

Leather

Ever gotten into a car with leather seats, or taken a big whiff of your dad's leather jacket?
