Profile

Description

Bodegas Alceño is one of the oldest wineries from southern Spain, having produced wine in the Jumilla appellation since 1870. This makes them one of the oldest producers still making high quality wines from the Monastrell varietal. They excel at producing juicy, fresh versions of this red grape variety, despite the hot, arid Mediterranean summers. Bodegas Alceño belongs to the family Bastida, who own historic estates sprawled across the Spanish countryside. Their vineyards vary greatly in altitude and are all farmed organically. The philosophy is to maintain the traditional aspects of winemaking while working with modern techniques that ensure sustainability is at the forefront of all viticultural practises. The health of the vineyards is of utmost importance. The aim is to produce wines that are in their most natural state as possible. While this historic wine dynasty owns the majority of their vineyards, they also work with local growers in each region. They currently produce wines in Ribera del Duero, La Mancha, Rioja, Utiel-Requena, Jumilla, and Cava.Monastrell has its roots in France as well, where it is locally known as Mourvèdre, and blended in Southern Rhone reds, most famously, Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Deliciously ripe with vibrant aromas of raspberry and black cherries. Youthful in style, exhibiting a unique freshness, this wine is medium-bodied with well integrated tannins, deep flavours, and hints of spice.
