Profile

Description

Familia Valdelana is a historic monument in its own right. Located in Elciego, which is a village that sits between Logrono and Vitoria in the region known as Rioja Alavesa. This sleepy little village is the birthplace of what we have come to know as Rioja wine. Bodegas Valdelana not only produces olive oil but also houses two museums located in their 15th century cellar. They also own a small selection of quarters that visitors can stay at while visiting the estate. The house produces five distinct Spanish brands, each one unique in its own way. Valdelana is situated nicely between the Ebro River and the Sierra de Cantabria, which protects the vines from the extreme cold of the north. The soils are primarily made up of chalk-clay which are very poor (ideal for vines) and hard to work with, but produce astonishing grapes. The microclimate of their vineyards is mainly Mediterranean with an Atlantic and continental influence. They are blessed with long, dry hot summers, perfect for the ripening of their Spanish vines. The only vines they grow are all traditional Spanish varietals that are found in the region. This Malvasia is bright on the palate and is blended with some Viura which brings a lift to the wine’s fruit and adds a weighty texture to the wine.
