Description
First Drop Winery is located in the heart of the Barossa Valley but produces wine from Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, and Barossa itself. Started in 2004, John Retsas and the First Drop family are pioneering leaders in quality, sustainability, and a focus on purity of wine at the forefront. They aim to produce wines that are complex, vibrant in nature, and are modern expressions of the terroir in which they come from. Their wines are a harmonious blend of tradition and modern expression. First Drop works with a very large group of growers to ensure diversity among regional sites and use a minimal intervention technique in the winery. Adelaide Hills wine region has higher elevation and a cool climate which is ideally suited for Chardonnay as well as Italian varietals. The fruit in this wine was crushed immediately as soon as it arrived at the winery and half was drained into the tank and the other half into French oak barrels for fermentation. Matured sur lie with weekly batonnage for six months creates the creamy texture one feels on the palate.
