Description
Owner Sergio Marchetti's patriarchal family history goes back to the 18th century, and they have lived and farmed the same land for generations. When some of the properties were sold off and divided, Fossacolle was kept. It spans four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. The vineyards have the perfect microclimate and benefit from the wind that hails from nearby Maremma. Here, the grapes ripen with relative ease and can relish in a long ripening process without climatic restraints. Grapes are transported to the cellar in small boxes, they are only picked by hand. The resulting grapes experience a few days of cold pre-fermentation maceration before being fermented in steel tubs and concrete vats. The resulting wines are then placed in oak vats and French barriques. In 1984 the first Sangiovese vines were planted. It was as early as 1997 that the vineyards were registered as Brunello di Montalcino. Their first vintage was released on January 1st, 2002. Sergio only makes four wines, Brunello, Brunello Riserva, Rosso di Montalcino, and the Riesci. This super Tuscan blend has a deep ruby core and presents rich, well-ripened fruit on the palate. The nose is surprisingly intense, and the mouthfeel supports velvet-smooth tannins, with a rounded texture. Hints of red berries, leather, and spice balance out notes of leather, dried cherry, and licorice.
