Description
Falanghina has a history that goes all the way back to the Roman ages. A white grape varietal that is grown almost exclusively in the Campania region of Italy. This grape was used in the production of Falernian, the famous wine Roman Emperors used to drink and the inspiration for Falerno Del Massico. Falanghina, 30 years ago made some pretty highly acidic wines that pretty much no one wanted to drink, but thanks to modern viticulture techniques that enabled proper development of the grape and a better understanding of how to ferment this varietal, it is making a huge comeback. Falanghina has been traveling the world and now you can see it being produced in New World countries like the USA. South America and Australia. This wine comes from Sannio, a pretty hilly area just north of Naples which gained its DOC status in 1997. Here the terroir is utilized to make stunning wines of quality, all from traditional, indigenous varietals. La Guardiense is a co-operative winery and this wine is considered one of the top five Falanhinas produced in the country. Established in 1960, this winery now boasts more than 1000 local members who farm over 1,500 hectares and is one of the largest cooperatives in Italy. La Guardiense continually invests in research and projects that develop their vineyards and protect them for the future. They are sustainable, organic, and sulfur-free. Their focus is primarily on Aglianico and Falanghina. The Aicon Falaghina was produced from 15-year-old vines. Manually picked, cold fermented, and aged in stainless steel tanks. This wine gives off a lovely stone fruit, green apple, and acacia flower aroma with secondary notes of pear, tangerine, and peach. Mineral-driven with a bracing fresh acidity that is both balanced and pleasing.
