Description
Coming from one of the world's oldest wine making countries with wine production dating back to the 1600’s, coming across these wines is surprisingly rare. Tokaj was the first designated wine region in the world, declared so by royalty in 1737. Wine has been made in Hungary since it was part of the larger Roman Empire, and started with the Romans bringing vines to the region. Tokaj wine is so important to Hungary that it is even mentioned in the country’s national anthem, “Himnusz'': “In the grape fields of Tokaj, you dripped sweet nectar.” However, the wine industry didn't really take off until the fall of communism, when capitalists started seeking new investment opportunities. Tokaj was originally known for sweet dessert wines. Made from Botrytized grapes (a “noble rot” causing grapes to concentrate their juice, similar to Sauternes), this wine had its peak popularity in the eighteenth century. Due to climate changes and a shift in style preferences, there’s a more significant production of dry wines from the region. Made from Furmint grapes native to Tokaj, this wine is a beautiful example of what Hungary has to offer. Drink now or in 3 years from now at 10°C.
