Description

For a long time, asking for Greek wine in a restaurant or wine shop would get you either a blank look or a bottle of Retsina, the ubiquitous (and often very low quality) white aged in resinous barrels. Thankfully, that's been quietly changing for the last few decades, as quality-minded producers have renewed their focus on the country's wealth of fascinating indigenous grapes. Assyrtiko is a great example - believed to hail from the island of Santorini, it's one of the country's most important grape varieties. Geometria is a project from Lafazanis, one of Greece's most commercially-important wineries. It was founded by Vasilis Lafazanis in 1946, and is now helmed by son Spyros and grandchildren Athena and Vassilis. Their Assyrtiko is sourced from Nemea, where the winery is located, and in neighbouring Corinthia, where vineyards have soils that are predominantly chalk and limestone. This combination results in wines that are high in acidity with a mineral freshness. Enjoy this refreshing taste of Santorini at about 10 C over the next 2-3 years.

Pairing

Serve with a starter of fresh greens in a citrus vinaigrette, or try pairing with just about any seafood, from grilled spot prawns to crispy calamari.

Aromas and Flavours

Lemon-lime

Common in cool climate white wines, this aroma can range from fresh citrus to lemon zest.

Grapefruit

As refreshing as aromas come, the smell of grapefruit is purely invigorating.

Peach

Fuzzy peach candies, or real-life fuzzy peaches fresh from a fresh B.C fruit stand.

Pear

A romantic picnic in the orchard, with your partner and their favourite white wine.

Apple

From Granny Smith to Red Delicious, apple makes for a delightfully crisp aroma.
