Profile

Description

Stark-Condé is a family-owned and operated winery in Stellenbosch. Hans Schroder, the owner, grew up in the region. He moved back to South Africa in the late 1980s with his wife and three daughters and decided to purchase the Oude Nektar farm in 1989 and grow grapes. José, the cellarmaster, who has a background in graphic design, became passionate about wine when he moved to South Africa with his wife Marie (Hans’ daughter). Lucky for him, Hans farms arguably the best Cabernet grapes in the region, and so he began to make wine. He made his first wine in 2000 with basic equipment and used traditional methods that he knew. What are the odds that this wine got rated 92 points by Wine Spectator and was selected by UK wine writer, Oz Clarke as one of the Top 20 Wines Of The Year? His destiny was pretty clear. Fast forward many years later, José became head winemaker and has slowly developed the wines to what they are today. He also designs all the labels! The Jonkershoek Valley, where the winery is situated, is uniquely situated in its elevation and terroir, giving perfect conditions for the production of premium grapes. Bold and rich with savoury notes and dense red fruit, this wine has an intensity of flavour and depth. The style of this Syrah is elegant and polished.
