Profile

Description

The Solesta Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore produced by Velenosi is a fascinating representation of the Marche region in Italy. This wine is a blend of two grapes: Montepulciano and its cousin Sangiovese. The winery was a collaboration between two young entrepreneurs Angela and Ercole Velenosi in 1984 in the Marche region. With almost no capital and very little experience, Angela and Ercole built the winery from the ground up, helping to establish the reputation for quality driven wines that are centered on the lesser-known indigenous varietals of Passerina, Pecorino, Lacrima Di Morro, Montepulciano and Vernaccia Nera. In 1984 Angela and her husband took advantage of an Italian government agricultural project that motivated people to move from the cities and set up shop in the countryside so to speak. The focus of the project was to rebuild local winemaking businesses and traditions. They started with only 9 hectares and two wines and have grown over the 30 years span to over 148 hectares and producing 34 wines. Recognized by Wine Spectator as one of Italy’s top wineries, the husband-and-wife duo continue to work hard to broaden and refine the wines of this region. They currently produce over 2.5 million bottles of wine and sell to over 52 countries worldwide. Attilio Pagli, who was named “Decanter Man of the Year” is one of Italy’s top winemakers, consults for the winery.
