Profile

Description

Zisola is one of three wine estates that the Mazzei family owns. the family can trace its roots back generations to their famous ancestor Ser Lapo Mazzei who was one of the famous pioneers of Chianti Classico. Zisola was an investment in the rich lands, culture, and viticultural of the island. The Mazzei family saw the potential and bought the estate in 2003. The property rests on 50 hectares and extends around the 3 buildings "bagli" of the estate. The vineyards area surrounded by citrus trees, olives, and almonds.Zisola is only a few steps away from Noto, famous for its baroque buildings and Unesco World Heritage Site. Only 24 hectares are planted to vines and are quite dense in plantings. This is the land of Nero d'Avola, the indigenous varietal of Sicily. Cradled with a magnificent natural landscape, the vineyards are cradled in a typical southern Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Breezes from the Ionian Sea bring relief to the vines during the hot months and bring a cooling influence to the vines. The soils are a perfect mix of limestone and stony gravel, an ideal combination that enhances the complexity of the wines. They make five different wines at the winery but the focus is really on the historic Nero d'Avola. This vintage saw 10 months in new French oak, adding to the structure and complexity of the wine.

Pairing

Veal parmigana, stewed octopus in a rich tomato sauce, and beef in black bean sauce.

Aromas and Flavours

Cherry

Fresh B.C. cherries out of the back of a truck, all eaten before you can get them home!

Plum

Sweet, fruity and sensual, similar stone fruit aromas to a peach, but without the 'fuzziness'.

Licorice

Childhood memories of fighting over the black Jujubes, or avoiding them altogether...

Tobacco

The smell of a freshly rolled cigar, slightly sweet, and earthy - just like Grandpa's hugs.

Olive

Briny quality, slightly bitter and green. Think about that dirty Martini you recently had!
