Description
Sicily, once written off as one of Italy's many regions producing quirky and interesting (though not necessarily world-class quality) wines, is in the middle of a renaissance. Led by the stunning wines of Etna, made from grapes grown in the volcanic soils of the mountain's slopes, Sicily as a whole is now achieving long-deserved respect and recognition.
Cantine Europa is one of the island's longest-tenured and most important cooperatives. Their Roceno label highlights their best vineyards, and though it may initially seem surprising, Viognier is right at home in Sicily's climate. The grape is native to the south of France, in the hot and windy Rhone valley, which makes it well adapted to the dry and sunny Sicilian summer. Enjoy this textured, expressive white at about 12 C over the next 2-3 years.
Pairing
This is a versatile food wine, but we'd recommend matching the weight and texture of this white with cream-based pasta dishes, fish in mild curry, or roast chicken or turkey.
